Salar Ansari is a DJ, producer, instrumentalist and engineer, uniquely positioned at the forefront of the sonic connection bridging the Middle East and the Midwest. Born in Tehran a decade after the Iranian Revolution, his childhood was spent discovering and selecting music for his parents underground parties, a defiance to strict government regulations around dancing at the time. He started DJing properly at the age of 16 and upon a relocation to Dubai at 19, co-founded the globally renowned event series Analog Room with his brother and close friend. In his time as a resident DJ with AR, they’ve brought acts like A Guy Called Gerald, Move D, Mr G, and Moritz Von Oswald to the region, championing a fusion of cultures.
Those nights shaped Ansari, imbing his DJ sets with a groove oriented hypnotic force. Preferring vinyl and his modified mixer and efx units, his varied selections and mature mixing skills make him a dancefloor favorite, able to speak to a variety of crowds while staying true to himself.
After moving to Detroit in 2015, he immersed himself in the culture that influences his sound, quickly gaining the attention of music giants such as Resto and Underground Resistance’s Mike Banks. Through their mentorship and support, he has garnered accolades from recording engineering with the famed Blue Note Records to winning the 2021 Detroit Music Awards for “Best Electronic Recording.” In total, he has featured on over 50 productions as an engineer, producer, and session musician while collaborating with an incredible array of artists across the globe.
He has released original music through Moozikeh Analog Room and Feeder Loft Records as well as his own imprint Passed Out On A Persian Rug. In addition to his own production work, he’s also a founder of improvisational dance act DMVND, along with Rafael Leafar and Ian Fink as well as Everyday Crisis with Luis Resto and George Rahme.
His work is focused on the intersections of analog and digital production, sonic and musical curation, site-specific sound installation, community-based collaboration, and underground space making. As an educator and performer, Salar has worked with institutions such as The Interlochen Center for the Arts, SAE, Red Bull Music Academy, and the University of Michigan. He currently serves the Head Engineer at Feeder Loft and Director of Resonance at POETIC SOCIETIES, a transmedia arts & healing technologies network.
